Tips: What is the difference between NO and NC Inductive Proximity Sensor?
A Normally Open (NO) inductive proximity sensor keeps its output OFF (no signal) when no metal target is detected, and turns ON (delivers a positive voltage for PNP type) as soon as the target enters the sensing range. This makes a NO inductive proximity sensor ideal for simple presence detection, part counting, and positioning tasks where a signal is only required when the object is present.
In contrast, a Normally Closed (NC) sensor maintains a continuous ON signal under normal conditions, and switches OFF (drops to 0V) when the target is detected. NC is preferred for fail-safe control systems, because any broken wire or power loss also cuts the signal, immediately triggering an alarm or machine stop. When choosing between them, select NO for standard on-demand detection and NC for safety-critical circuits that require constant loop monitoring. Always verify your PLC input type (PNP or NPN) and wiring to ensure proper compatibility with your selected output logic.
